The book provides a synthetic insight into a specific model of literary periodicals of the era of realism, which, as opposed to the major trends among literary-scientific periodicals, were characterised by a relatively flexible and unorthodox opting for a programme of realistic literature. Through a comparative analysis of certain columns in Javor [Maple-tree] and Stražilovo, the author shows how their editors and collaborators avoided more extreme poetic tendencies (naturalism), neutralised the analytical-critical functions of literature and maintained more intense connections with romanticism and the folklore tradition.
